Biography

Dr. LaManna is a board-certified physician who after retiring from active practice in 2016, pursued a long-held interest and became trained in Medical Acupuncture by the Helms Medical Institute in 2018 and was certified by the American Board of Medical Acupuncture in 2020. In addition to the 300 hours of training required by HMI, Dr. LaManna has received additional training in Chinese Scalp Acupuncture and Auricular (ear) Acupuncture including Auricular Allergy treatment.

He recently relocated to Portland from northeast Wyoming where he had practiced radiology for 35 years and maintained a part-time Medical Acupuncture practice since 2018. He moved to Portland to be closer to his children and first grandchild.

Dr. LaManna became curious about acupuncture after being successfully treated for back pain while training for a series of marathons in the early 2000’s. He decided after a year of retirement that he would try to learn how his back pain from a decade earlier had been resolved. Though somewhat skeptical at the start, he quickly became convinced that Medical Acupuncture could be of benefit in treating acute and chronic pain, often eliminating need for drugs and surgery. Recently, after additional training in Maryland, he has been impressed with use of auricular acupuncture in treating and often eliminating many allergies.

“I was treated by Dr. James LaManna for labile hypertension and back/neck pain back in the summer of 2021 using Medical Acupuncture. I was very pleased with the results. Dr. LaManna tried a variety of treatments in order to help me find relief. I felt very comfortable in the setting he provided. I would highly recommend Dr. LaManna for your acupuncture needs.”
